Her mother gave birth in an Shell station and Chris was present during the delivery. But in her book Strause does not deny the gossip surrounding her birth. Strause told Strause her mother had car trouble and she parked at a station. As she waited at the car station, she entered pre-labor. The attendant helped her to get to the hospital. Strause was born in an in-hospital. Her mother who was half Japanese/half Spanish was divorced before she knew she was pregnant. Jeff is her stepfather. Chrishell Strause had to live in a tent in middle school, so she was absent for the entire academic year. At that time, Strause mentioned washing her hair in the river, relying on food stamps and hiding her identity from her other students. At the age of 10, parents battled mental illness and addiction. Strause joined the Worldwide Church of God for a time. Her mother was never able to have an employment that was steady and Strause describes her as a free spirit and self-righteous.
